African football legends congratulates Mikel on retirement

The pair of Ahmed Musa and Didier Drogba has congratulated former Super Eagles captain, John Obi Mikel on his retirement from football.

Mikel, 35, took to his Instagram account to announce his retirement from the sport on Tuesday after an 18-year filled with outstanding achievements.

Former teammates of the 2012 UEFA Champions League winner at club and national team level, Drogba and Musa, have joined a host of football stars to congratulate Mikel.

The Ivorian striker who played with Mikel at Chelsea for lengthy years described the 2011-12 Champions League final against Bayern Munich at Allianz Arena was the former Nigeria skipper’s best ever game.

Recall the legendary striker and Mikel were fully involved in the game, with Drogba pulling Chelsea level on 88 minutes, five minutes after Thomas Muller had put Bayern Munich in front.

The Premier League giants triumphed 4-3 on penalties after both regulation and extra time ended 1-1.

While joining the list of renowned footballers and ex-footballers, Drogba, in an Instagram post relived the memories of the epic triumph in Germany, the biggest of many titles he won with Mikel at Chelsea.

“Congratulations, my brother, for your successful career. We’ve created great memories playing together at Chelsea FC and against the Nigeria Super Eagles. That Champions League final game in Munich was, for me, your best ever game. All the very best with your family for your next chapters, Mikel John Obi,” stated Drogba, who scored a total of 104 goals in 254 matches during his two stints with Chelsea.

Playing regularly alongside each other at Chelsea, Drogba and Mikel won two Premier League titles, three FA Cups, one Football League Cup, one FA Community Shield, one UEFA Champions League, and one UEFA Europa League.

In the same vein, Super Eagles skipper Ahmed Musa congratulated Mikel on his retirement, describing him as an exemplary player.

“You have been an exemplary player and done great things in your career. Here’s wishing you the best as you retire today. Cheers to bigger things ahead and best wishes to you and the family,” Musa stated on his Instagram account alongside the picture above, which shows Mikel in the Nigerian colours.
