African legend slams Klopp over AFCON comments

African football legend, Geremi Njitap has criticized Liverpool boss, Jurgen Klopp over his comment about the Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON.

The Liverpool coach dominated the headlines in November, while talking about the lack of international breaks for his players from then until March, told the press that there was a ‘little tournament in Africa’ coming up in January.

Since then, the German tactician has disclosed that he was misinterpreted and he did not mean to offend anyone with his statement because it was made tongue in cheek.

However, Geremi has refused to forgive the German and has explained just how important AFCON is to him and Africans.

When Jurgen Klopp described the Africa Cup of Nations as a ‘little tournament’ I was far from impressed,’ Geremi wrote for the Daily Mail.

“A lot of fans from outside of Africa may not know but in my view, AFCON is the third most important football tournament on the planet and it means so much to anyone competing on this stage.

“I am unhappy about Klopp’s remarks, to say the least, and think it’s a big shame that the Liverpool manager has not respected the competition.”

The 2021 edition of the Africa Cup of Nations will begin on the 9th of January in Geremi's home nation, Cameroon.

The tournament would feature Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, and Naby Keita who play their club football with Liverpool under Klopp's management.
