CAFCC: Rivers United grabs vital draw, progress to group stage
Rivers United will be the only Nigerian side on the continent for the 2022-2023 season after progressing into the group stage of the CAF Confederations Cup with a 1-all draw against Al Nasr in the play-offs second leg at Benina Martyrs Stadium on Wednesday.
Despite the hostile treatments received from fans of Al Nasr since arriving in Benghazi until kick-off of the match, The Nigerian champions didn't fret and were able to defend their hefty 5-0 advantage in the first leg at Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt on November 2.
Looking to do the unthinkable, the home team went in front on 39 minutes through Abdulsalam Al Fitouri, while Nwangwa Nyima leveled the scores on 57 minutes for Rivers United, who progressed to the lucrative group stage 6-1 on aggregate.
Meanwhile, it was a sorry case for Plateau United who shockingly surrendered a 3-goal advantage in the dying minutes of their second leg clash against Alakhdar SC in an earlier tie at Martyrs of February Stadium also in Benghazi.
After a convincing 4-1 win in the first leg at MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja on November 2, Fidelis Ilechukwu’s team were expected to secure a decent result in Benghazi and progress to the next stage, but an unbelievable second-half implosion saw them concede three goals to exit the series on the away goal rule with scores tied at 4-4.
