CAFWCL: Bayelsa Queens revives semifinal hopes after TP Mazembe defeat

Bayelsa Queens on Thursday night, defeated TP Mazembe 0-2 in their 2022 CAF Women’s Champions League second group game, earning their first win in the competition.

The Pride of Bayelsa had lost their first-ever match to Mamelodi Sundowns in the premier CAF club women’s football and needed victory to revive their hopes of a semi-final berth.

The game followed the same pattern as when they faced the South Africans, with Bayelsa Queens dominating the early proceedings against TP Mazembe.

However, the Prosperity Girls made their dominance count this time as they shot into the lead just four minutes into the game with Miracle Joseph scoring from the penalty spot to give Bayelsa Queens a 1-0 lead.

Twenty-one minutes later, Chinyere Igboamalu struck to double Bayelsa Queens’ lead.

On the resumption of the second half, neither team could score, leaving the Nigerian side with the maximum points for the night and pushing them to second in the group standing.

Having registered three points in two games, the Bayelsa Queens are poised for the semi-final of the competition.

The coach Domo Okara's ladies will take on Wadi Degla of Egypt in their final group match on Sunday with victory almost giving them passage to the next stage of the tournament.

In the other Group B match on Thursday, Mamelodi Sundowns had ensured their CAF Women’s Champions League title defence remained on course as they romped to a 5-0 win over Wadi Degla.

With six points from their two matches, the South Africans have all but qualified for the semi-final.

However, there is a lot to play for in the final group games with Bayelsa Queens and TP Mazembe tied on three points after two games.
