Chelsea coach speaks after Real Madrid defeat

Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel has said his side “will get hammered at the Bernabeu” if they continue producing poor performances.

They lost Wednesday night’s first-leg of their Champions League quarter-final 3-1 against Real Madrid, with Karim Benzema scoring a hat-trick.

It was their second heavy home defeat in a row, having lost 4-1 defeat against Brentford on Sunday.

Thomas Tuchel particularly criticised his side’s first-half display, which saw them fall to a 2-0 deficit thanks to two brilliant Benzema headers.

Kai Havertz looked to have pulled Chelsea back into the game before half-time, but Edouard Mendy’s error soon after the restart allowed Benzema to add his third from 25 yards.

Speaking to BT Sport after the game, Tuchel said: “It’s a heavy loss. It was one of the worst first halves that I have seen from us at Stamford Bridge.

“At this kind of level, you cannot play like this. We were far, far, far from our standards, and when that happens you lose games.

“It’s not just that we were so open defensively. It was everything – when we pass, how we pass, where we pass, the intensity in challenges, the desire, how we closed spaces. The first half was so far from any standards that we set ourselves, so we cannot complain.”

Asked about his mood ahead of the second-leg, he refocused the question on Saturday’s Premier League fixture against Southampton.

“What do you expect me to do, stand here and smile? We don’t have to go to Madrid, we have to go to Southampton.

“I will make sure that everybody processes this, because if we keep playing like this we will lose at Southampton. And then we don’t need to think about the Bernabeu, because we’ll get hammered at the Bernabeu.”
