Chilwell set to miss rest of the season
Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell will undergo surgery on a knee injury that is likely to rule him out for the rest of the season.
Chilwell, 25, underwent a scan on Monday with the club deciding that surgery was the best course of action.
The timing of the decision was further complicated by Chilwell testing positive for COVID-19, which meant he had to isolate for 10 days.
The 25-year-old England left-back suffered the problem in Chelsea’s 4-0 win against Juventus in November.
Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel later revealed that Chilwell had suffered a “partial injury of his ACL”.
The Athletic earlier reported that Chilwell had returned to light running as the club deliberated over whether or not the defender would need to go under the knife.
That report also made clear that speculation about an imminent return to action was wide of the mark and that Chelsea always intended for the full-back to return to some form of training before deciding on whether or not he needed to go under the knife.
That proved to be the case with Chilwell now facing a period of months out of action.
Chelsea are yet to confirm Chilwell’s situation although Tuchel is expected to provide an update during his media duties for the game on Wednesday night.
The news will come as a huge blow to the German manager. Chilwell had been in impressive form for the league challengers, with three goals and one assist this season.
The news will also disappoint England manager Gareth Southgate, whose side begin their UEFA Nations League campaign in June, with difficult matches against Italy, Germany and Hungary.
