EFL: Tuchel considering risking Silva, Kante for Tottenham clash
Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel is considering “gambling” on Thiago Silva and N’Golo Kante’s fitness ahead of their Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday.
Silva and Kante have missed Chelsea’s last two fixtures — the 2-0 win over Tottenham in the first leg last Wednesday and the 5-1 FA Cup victory against Chesterfield on Saturday — after testing positive for COVID-19.
Tuchel, however, may risk including the duo in the crucial second leg despite appearing to imply they have not yet returned to training following their isolation.
Asked if it would be too soon to select Silva and Kante against Spurs, Tuchel said on Tuesday: “I don’t know actually, I have to wait if they are in training this afternoon and then let’s see how they respond to the training.
“It’s a gamble, if we do it it’s a gamble and I’m not sure if we do it and how much of a responsibility we can take there. But we have to do it step by step, I’m not in the moment even sure if they come to training. If they come to training, we have to see the reaction and then decide then.
"They are out of isolation, but they have to have cardiac tests, and test negative, and of course COVID tests. But there are also further protocols to follow before you can bring them back to training.”
Chelsea will take on their London rivals in the second-leg of their Carabao Cup clash on Wednesday.
