Gallagher joins England squad as Mount, Sterling, Shaw miss out

Chelsea midfielder on loan at Crystal Palace, Conor Gallagher has received a maiden call-up to the England senior squad.

Gallagher has been added to Gareth Southgate’s squad from the under-21s ahead of Monday’s match against San Marino and will train with the team at the Tottenham Hotspur Training Ground before travelling for the game.

Mason Mount, Jordan Henderson, Raheem Sterling, Jack Grealish and Luke Shaw, meanwhile, will not journey with the side for the World Cup qualifier.

Mount and Shaw will no longer join the squad after they delayed their arrivals due to dental surgery and concussion respectively, while Henderson and Grealish will return to their clubs for further assessment on injuries and Raheem Sterling misses out due to a personal matter.

Gallagher played 89 minutes in the England Under-21’s 3-1 victory against the Czech Republic on Thursday. The 21-year-old has been in impressive form at Palace so far this campaign, scoring four goals in 10 Premier League games from midfield.

He is not the first player to be promoted from the under-21s during this international break, with Arsenal’s Emile Smith Rowe called up on Monday following the withdrawals of Marcus Rashford and James Ward-Prowse.

Having comfortably beaten Albania 5-0 on Thursday, England need only a point from the San Marino fixture to guarantee qualification for next winter’s Qatar World Cup.
