Gerrard exits Aston Villa after winless run
Steven Gerrard has been sacked by Aston Villa amid the club’s poor start to the Premier League season.
Aston Villa spent big in the summer, backing Gerrard by bringing in top players such as Diego Carlos, Leander Dendoncker and Boubacar Kamara. However, they have won just two of their 11 league matches so far.
The Villans were beaten 3-0 by Fulham at Craven Cottage on Thursday night, which took their winless run to four matches. And this was the final straw for the Aston Villa owners as they released a brief statement confirming Gerrard’s departure.
It reads: ‘Aston Villa Football Club can confirm that Head Coach Steven Gerrard has left the club with immediate effect.’
A club spokesman said: “We would like to thank Steven for his hard work and commitment and wish him well for the future.”
Following the defeat to Fulham, Gerrard looked dejected. He had been booed by his own fans and knew his job was under huge threat.
“It’s tough. I’m a man, I accept it, I feel their frustrations, I’m frustrated. It was a tough night for me personally,” Gerrard admitted during a post-match interview.
“We will see what happens. I’m a fighter, I will never, ever quit anything whether it’s football or in life.”
