Joe Gomez will be fit for the Champions League final

Liverpool are confident that Joe Gomez will be fit for the Champions League final after the centre-back underwent a scan on an ankle injury.

Gomez, 24, was forced off in the first half of Tuesday evening’s 2-1 win over Southampton, which kept the title race alive going into the final day of the season. Goals from Takumi Minamino and Joel Matip completed a comeback win.

Liverpool could win four trophies this season, should Manchester City slip up against Aston Villa in the Premier League, with the Champions League final the last piece of the jigsaw.

Speaking after the game on Gomez’s fitness, Klopp had said: “I hope we were lucky. Joe himself has pain but not too much.

“He got a real shock to the system in the foot. But he’s sitting in the dressing room and when I spoke to him he was in a good mood.

“Maybe we were probably lucky but we have to figure that out.”

After scans, Liverpool are content that there is no serious damage, and Gomez should be available if he responds well to treatment if called upon against Real Madrid in 10 days time.

Gomez has played 21 times for Liverpool this season, including seven in the Champions League. He has generally been the fourth-choice centre-back behind Virgil van Dijk, Matip, and Ibrahima Konate, and second-choice right-back behind Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Van Dijk was forced off during last weekend’s FA Cup final, along with star attacker Mohamed Salah, but Klopp expects both to feature on the final day of the season against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Speaking ahead of the Southampton game, the Liverpool manager said: “They are both OK. So, the target would be for both that they can be involved again on the weekend. Properly involved, bench or whatever and a few minutes or start, I don’t know, we will see that, because that would then be perfect for the game (Champions League final).

“But if not then we take each day afterwards. But we are very positive, or (have) no doubt about the final. I’m pretty realistic about the Wolves game, but tomorrow rather not.”
