Mike Brown loses first game as D-Tigers coach
Nigeria’s male basketball team, D’Tigers were defeated by their Australian counterparts 108-69.
in a friendly game in Las Vegas ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
D’Tigers had dominated the headlines before the game and went into the clash full of confidence. The Nigerians had beaten the world champions, United States of America 90-87 and world number four, Argentina 94-71 before the loss.
The Australians were effective all through the game, preventing the Nigerians from getting into good shooting positions. They also exhibited good defending tactics and were 13 points ahead after the first quarter (26-13)
At the end of their first half, the Aussies led 49-29. After the third quarter, the score had increased to 84-46, and the game ended with an amazing point gap of 39, ending 108-69.
Obi Emegano and Josh Okogie both scored 10 points apiece for D’Tigers while Jahlil Okafor had seven points and five rebounds and Ike Iroegbu also scored seven points in a game they will want to forget in a hurry.
This loss is Mike Brown’s first loss with D’Tigers since taking charge of the team in 2020, and he will hope his team bounce back from the loss, and more importantly, get to the podium in Japan.
Nigerians on social media took the defeat in good faith as the official account of the NBBF kept fans abreast of the scores. The two sides then posted that they were looking forward to a rematch in the QF.
