Nigeria's Women Handball Team thrashed in Nations Cup opener
The Nigerian Women Handball Team began their journey to Olympic qualification when they played DR Congo in their opening match of the ongoing Africa Women Handball Championship in Yaoundé, Cameroon.
The quest for a ticket to the Olympics did not begin on a great note as the Nigerian players were thrashed 35-16 goals by their DR Congo counterparts at the Yaoundé Multipurpose Sports Complex.
Nigeria had a few opportunities and would look back on the chances that they missed. However, they were no match for the Congolese who went into the half-time break comfortably ahead with a scoreline of 18-3.
Coach Rafiu Salami’s ladies came back with better defenders and a determination to reduce the deficit. While the second half was an improvement to the first, the damage was already done.
The victory ensures that DR Congo leads group B while Nigeria will hope to get their campaign back on track when they play hosts Cameroon on Thursday in a game they cannot afford to lose.
