Olayemi, Sunusi to join Super Eagles in the USA for Mexico friendly

Tottenham Hotspur u-23 goalkeeper Joshua Olayemi and CF Montréal forward Ibrahim Sunusi have been called up to the Super Eagles squad to play Mexico on Saturday.

The two players will join the squad in the United States where the Super Eagles have already begun training. The game will take place at the LA Coliseum with a capacity of around 78,000 in California, United States of America.

All of the players in the initial squad play in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL). This is because a large proportion of the foreign contingent and regulars won’t be available because they are preparing for the new season with their respective clubs.

Also, the friendly is part of Mexico’s MexTour series, but it comes outside of the FIFA window for international matches. Thus, it provides the perfect opportunity for homegrown players to feature for the Super Eagles.

The inclusion of Olayemi and Sunusi will inject a bit of foreign style into the predominantly local side. Olayemi was called up as a replacement for the injured Ikechukwu Ezenwa.

Meanwhile, Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr is expected to be in the dugout on Sunday morning, having initially excused himself from the game. The 68-year-old joined the squad in the United States and led them in a training session.

Former Super Eagles defender Austin Eguavon was expected to be in charge, but he could not travel with the team after he was denied a visa.

Nigerians will be able to follow the game on television in the early hours of Sunday morning
