Real Madrid striker Benzema tests positive for COVID-19
Real Madrid have confirmed that French striker, Karim Benzema has tested positive for the COVID-19 virus.
The veteran forward reported for pre-season training with Los Blancos earlier this week and was subjected to the mandatory test players go through before training with the rest of their teammates.
Benzema has been one of the most important players in the squad since he joined the Spanish giants in 2009. He has been the talisman of the side since Cristiano Ronaldo left for Juventus in 2018. Benzema led Real Madrid to the 2019/20 La Liga title, finishing as their top scorer.
He joined the French squad for the Euro 2020 and scored four goals before Les Bleus were knocked out by Switzerland in the second round. Benzema hopes to bring that fine form to Madrid as they aim to retain the league title they lost to Atletico last season.
The 33-year-old striker will have to remain in isolation until he tests negative for COVID-19, at which point he can return for pre-season training with his club teammates.
Real Madrid have not provided any details about Benzema's condition, so it is unclear if he has any symptoms caused by COVID-19 or if he is asymptomatic.
Benzema is about to enter his 13th season at the Santiago Bernabeu, with an extension to the summer of 2023 done. Spanish reports understand that Benzema is looking forward to working with new coach Carlo Ancelotti, with whom he has an excellent relationship.
