REPORTS: Messi agrees to stay in Barcelona

Barcelona captain Lionel Messi has reportedly taken a 50% wage cut to remain at Camp Nou for another five years.

Several reports from Spain on Wednesday indicated that “Messi and Barcelona have reached an agreement for a new five-year deal.” Quoting a source, ESPN said “Messi has accepted a significant wage reduction to prolong his stay.”

Barcelona fans would be pleased that the greatest player in the club’s history would remain at the club after weeks of speculation over his future. Messi won the Copa America earlier this week, his first major trophy for the Argentina senior national team.

He also emerged as the best player of the competition, scoring four goals and making five assists. The reports claiming that he would remain with the Catalans would be a great way to end the week for the Argentine legend.

Barcelona President Joan Laporta had always claimed that he was confident that Messi would stay at the club. Laporta presented Messi with the ideas of a sporting project that can richen his final years at the club with more trophies and success.
