Rohr reveals he was pressured to invite some players to Super Eagles

Updated: Dec 18, 2021

Former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has revealed he had been constantly pressured by NFF officials to invite certain players, adding that the pressure made the working conditions very difficult to manage.

The German tactician made this known during an all-baring interview with ESPN after he was relieved of his position by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on Monday as the head coach of the Nigerian national team after five years and four months in charge.

“I got a lot of suggestions but I always wait,” Rohr said. “I understand that the officials want to do well — everybody wants to bring in his advice, his opinion — but in the end it was too much and it was difficult to work in these conditions.”

He also revealed he had never been offered money to invite any player because his reputation in Africa and Europe as incorruptible preceded him. “No, never,” Rohr said when asked if anyone offered him money.

“They know me in Africa and in Europe for a long time that I’m part of these people who can never be corrupted. My reputation is there. To take one player to help him in some clubs is something we did, but only in the interest of Nigerian football, only to help the players, and never for money.”
