Rooney: Man United should pick Pochettino as the next manager

Wayne Rooney believes Manchester United should appoint Mauricio Pochettino ahead of Erik ten Hag this summer.

Pochettino and Ten Hag are the two leading contenders to be named the next permanent manager of Manchester United with interim boss Ralf Rangnick set to step aside at the end of the season.

The managerial duo have steered Paris Saint-Germain and Ajax to the top of their respective leagues in France and the Netherlands but Rooney has revealed why he would plump for the Argentinian.

Rooney, speaking on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football, said: "I think Pochettino has done it in the Premier League, he knows the Premier League.

"At Tottenham, he brought a lot of young players through, at Southampton, he brought a lot of young players through as well.

"If I'm choosing between one of the two, that's who I'd choose, I'd go for Pochettino and give him time. Managers now, they need time to come in and actually put their blueprint on the club and the team. If you gave him time, I think he'd do well. In my opinion, he's a top manager."

Rangnick's side, who drew 1-1 with Leicester City on Saturday, are three points behind fourth-placed Tottenham and fifth-placed Arsenal but the north London side have a game in hand.

United are next in action on Saturday when they travel to Goodison Park to face Everton.
