Super Eagles aim to extend unbeaten record against Cameroon
The Super Eagles of Nigeria will hope to extend their 6-game unbeaten run against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon when both sides clash at the Weiner Neustadt Stadium in Austria this Friday.
The Super Eagles lost the final of the 2000 Africa Cup of Nations to Cameroon on home turf but have not lost to the Cameroonians since that time. Nigeria knocked Cameroon out of the 2004 AFCON and came from behind to beat Cameroon 3-2 in the round of 16 at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Nigerians are unbeaten in the last 6 games against Cameroon, winning 5 and drawing one. The Super Eagles would head into this tie full of confidence because of the head to head record, and their recent performances in competitive games and friendlies.
The Super Eagles secured their spot in the upcoming AFCON tournament having finished the qualifying stages unbeaten. In fact, the only loss recorded by the Nigerian team in the last 10 games was inflicted by African Champions; Algeria.
The players in the Nigerian squad also enjoyed successful seasons at some of the top clubs in Europe and Africa. However, Gernot Rohr faces a selection headache because a significant number of players will not be available for the clash against Cameroon.
Victor Osimhen, Simy Nwankwo, Zaidu Sanusi, Semi Ajayi, Ola Aina, Tyronne Ebuehi and Kevin Akpoguma informed the national team coach of their inability to make the trip due to injuries but the players available should be able to do enough to continue the impressive record against Cameroon.
Maduka Okoye is expected to retain his spot in goal while Shehu Abdullahi and Jamilu Collins would operate as full-backs. Troost-Ekong and Awaziem would be a solid pairing at centre-back while Ndidi and Etebo would play in a midfield pivot. Iwobi, Iheanacho, Ahmed Musa and Paul Onuachu completes the attack.
