T/Tennis: Edem, Quadri out of TOKYO2020
Nigeria’s Offiong Edem on Monday bowed out of the women’s singles event of the table tennis competition at the ongoing 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
Edem lost 4-1 to Lily Zhang of the USA at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium, in spite of winning the first set 15-13. Edem failed to maintain the momentum after beating Hungary’s Dora Madarasz in her opening round fixture.
She fell 2-11 and 2-11 in the next two sets under nine minutes. The 34-year-old Nigerian tried to mount a fightback, but she could not stem the tide as she lost 8-11 and 6-11 in the fourth and fifth sets respectively.
Aruna Quadri has also been knocked out from table tennis men’s singles events at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The Team Nigeria’s captain to Tokyo2020 lost 4-2 (15-13, 9-11, 6-11, 11-7, 7-11, 6-11) to a Brazilian, Gustavo Tsuboi, in a keenly fought contest.
