TOKYO2020: Brume wins first medal for Team Nigeria
Nigerian jumper Ese Brume picked up a bronze medal in the finals of the women's long jump event after an outstanding performance. this is the first medal for Team Nigeria at the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Olympic games,
Brume qualified for the final stage on Sunday morning after she leapt to a distance of 6.76m, 1cm more than the required mark to seal her place.
Brume jumped a distance of 6.97 in the finals – the same distance as second-placed Brittney Reese – but the Nigerian finished third with the countback – their second-best distance.
The 24-year-old has now won Nigeria’s first medal at this year’s competition, and Team Nigeria will hope to win more medals, and better their last two editions of the Olympics.
Brume is Nigeria’s only representative in the jumps in Tokyo since the disqualification of Ruth Usoro by the Athletics Integrity Unit. Apart from Ajunwa’s gold in 1996 Atlanta, Blessing Okagbare is another Nigerian to have won a medal in the Olympic Long Jump event having won silver at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
Nigeria is sure of winning another medal in wrestling, after Blessing Oborududu qualified for the final of the women’s 68kg, and will win either the gold or the bronze medal. So, it is safe to say Team Nigeria has secured two medals, and are hopeful for more medals.
