Trae Young scores 56 points as Hawks lose to Trail Blazers
Hawks point guard Trae Young racked up 56 points, a new career-high, in Monday night's loss to the Trail Blazers. Despite the performance, Atlanta ultimately fell 136-131, moving to 16-20 on the season.
Young's previous career-high of 50 points came against the Heat on Feb. 20, 2020, when the Hawks picked up a 129-124 win.
The 23-year-old hit seven 3-pointers on Monday and went 15-for-15 from the free-throw line, adding 14 assists and four rebounds. Both Clint Capela and Kevin Huerter had double-digit points for the Hawks with 22 and 18, respectively.
But it wasn't enough to outlast the Trail Blazers, who had four players score 20-plus points. Anfernee Simmons led the way with 43, also a career-high, while Norman Powell put up 26, Nassir Little added 22 and Jusuf Nurkic had 21. Simmons dedicated his performance to his grandfather, who he said died of cancer Sunday night.
Since returning from health and safety protocols against Denver on Dec. 27, Young has scored 29, 26, 35 and now 56 points in each of his outings. He's averaging 27.5 points, 2.9 rebounds and 9.4 assists per game this season, his fourth in the league.
