Two Chelsea stars to be assessed ahead of Carabao Cup Final
Chelsea duo Mateo Kovacic and Hakim Ziyech face a race to be fit for Sunday’s Carabao Cup final with Liverpool. Both players had to be substituted during Chelsea’s 2-0 Champions League win over Lille at Stamford Bridge.
Kovacic was replaced by Ruben Loftus-Cheek in the 51st minute while Saul Niguez came on for Ziyech nine minutes later in the first leg of the last-16 encounter. Thomas Tuchel has said the club will assess the duo over the next few days ahead of this weekend’s cup final at Wembley.
“I should have substituted Kovacic earlier at half-time, so could have had one more change,” admitted Tuchel. “I did not see Hakim’s injury, I have not spoken to the doctor. I hope it is not too much, but it is a little bit the story of the season (with injuries).
“Today is Tuesday, until Sunday it is good because there are a lot of days for us to recover, so we will take care of that. We don’t like to have that many injuries and would like to have more impact from the bench in a tactical matter, but it is what it is. Let’s see, I hope the guys will be ready for Sunday.”
Kai Havertz and Christian Pulisic scored the goals to put Chelsea in the driving seat against their French opponents.
